Best Vitamins in Skincare Products

Why Vitamins?

“Both internal and external use of vitamins is critical for skin health. Topical applications work by creating local action,” says Dr Chytra V Anand, cosmetic dermatologist, founder Kosmoderma Clinics.

When applied appropriately, absorption of active vitamins can be more than 90%. In this article, we will share some of the best vitamins to look out for in your skincare products backed with scientific evidence.

Vitamin A

Also known as the Retinoids some examples include Retinol, Retinal, Retinaldehyde and others. They generally have similar benefits but varies in potency and conversion process. They are star ingredients in many anti-ageing skincare products. Vitamin A enriched products can help to increase collagen production, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, stimulate cell turnover and improves overall skin elasticity. On the downside, they can cause irritation, peeling or increased skin sensitivity. These products are usually recommended to be used during the night, starting from a low dose and slowly increasing the concentration and frequency of application.

Vitamin B

There are 8 types of Vitamin B: Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacinamide), B5 (Pantothenic Acid), B6 (Pyridoxine), B7 (Biotin), B9 (Folate), B12 (Cyanocobalamin).

The most common forms are Vitamin B3 and Vitamin B5.

Helps to heal, moisturise, protect and soothe the skin. In particular, the provitamin, Panthenol is preferred to be incorporated into skincare products due to its ability to easily penetrate the skin surface. Panthenol when topically applied, quickly converts into Vitamin B5 and hence, is often used interchangeably. Adding on, it is able to boost the production of glutathione, which is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radical damage.

Vitamin C

Commonly taken orally and applied topically, this dermatologist favourite ingredient is a powerful antioxidant effective against many skin issues including dullness, discoloration, dark spots and wrinkles. However, it is unstable and breaks down easily under UV or oxidation. As such, many forms of Vitamin C have been developed in an attempt to increase the stability, percutaneous absorption, and overall activity of this ingredient in topical formulations.
